Grabbing a sports or energy drink after exercise may seem like a quick way to replenish fluids, but these beverages can be tough on your teeth. Research shows that soaking tooth enamel in popular sports and energy drinks causes measurable loss of enamel; energy drinks like Rockstar, Monster and Red Bull cause twice as much enamel loss as sports drinks such as Powerade and Gatorade. The problem lies in their acidity and sugar content – the drinks can damage tooth enamel and raise your risk of cavities, sensitivity and eventual tooth loss.

Why these drinks are harmful

  • High acidity: Acidity (pH below 5.5) softens enamel. Fizzy drinks, sodas and sports drinks can cause erosion, even in diet or sugar‑free versions.
  • Sugar feeds bacteria: Sugar in sports and energy drinks is converted by oral bacteria into acid, which attacks enamel.
  • Frequent sips lengthen exposure: Each sip starts a new “acid attack,” and the mouth needs about 30 minutes to neutralise acid. Drinking over long periods leaves enamel under constant assault.

Safer ways to hydrate

  • Drink with meals: Have acidic or sugary drinks only at mealtimes to reduce the number of acid attacks.
  • Use a straw: Sipping through a straw helps drinks bypass teeth.
  • Rinse with water or chew sugar‑free gum: After drinking, rinse your mouth with water or chew sugar‑free gum to stimulate saliva, which helps neutralise acids.
  • Wait before brushing: Brush at least one hour after consuming acidic drinks so softened enamel can harden again.
  • Check labels and limit consumption: Read nutrition labels and choose drinks with lower sugar and citric acid. Even one drink per day can be harmful.
  • Choose water or milk: Plain water is the safest drink for teeth; milk also helps neutralise acids.

Frequent consumption of carbonated or acidic beverages is a major risk factor for dental erosion. Encourage kids and teens to reach for water during sports, and remind adults that energy drinks are best kept as an occasional treat rather than a daily habit.
