Losing a tooth changes more than how your smile looks. When a space opens up, nearby teeth slowly wander into it. Others can grow higher or lower than they should because nothing is keeping them in place. This shift throws off how your bite fits together and can put extra pressure on your jaw joints. The bone under the missing tooth also begins to shrink, which can alter your facial shape and complicate future treatment. Chewing more on one side increases stress on the remaining teeth and can lead to chips or cracks. Gaps can change how you speak and may make you feel less confident about smiling.

Replacement options

  • Dental implants: An implant is a titanium post placed in the jawbone that acts like a natural root. A custom crown is attached to it. Implants look and feel natural, help maintain bone, and do not rely on neighbouring teeth. They require surgery and healing time but offer long lasting stability.

  • Fixed bridges: A bridge uses the teeth on both sides of the gap for support. Those teeth are prepared for crowns, and a replacement tooth is joined between them. It avoids surgery and is useful when implants are not an option, although it does require reshaping the supporting teeth.

  • Removable partial dentures: These clip onto your existing teeth and can replace one or several missing teeth. They cost less, are easy to adjust, and are straightforward to repair. They can feel bulkier and must be taken out at night for cleaning.

  • Complete dentures: When every tooth in an upper or lower arch is missing, full dentures restore function and appearance. Adding implants underneath the denture can improve stability and comfort.

When to act

The ideal time to replace a tooth is shortly after it is removed so the bone stays strong and the surrounding teeth remain stable. Even if the space has been there for years, treatment is still possible. Some cases may need bone grafting before an implant can be placed.
